Lagos, originally known as “Eko” by the Awori subgroup of the Yoruba people, was established in the 15th century. The name “Lagos” was later given by Portuguese explorers in the 16th century, meaning “lakes.” In the 16th century, the Benin Empire conquered the area, turning it into a war camp and appointing a leader to govern.
By the 18th century, Lagos had become a significant center for the transatlantic slave trade. In 1851, the British bombarded Lagos to suppress the slave trade, and by 1861, it was annexed as a British colony. Lagos served as the capital of Nigeria until 1991 when the capital was moved to Abuja. Despite this, Lagos remains Nigeria’s largest city and its commercial and cultural hub.
