Open letter to His Excellency

Open Letter to His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde on the Proposed Oyo Monarch Chairmanship Rotational Bill 2025.

At this critical time, the issue confronting us goes beyond the chairmanship tussle among our revered monarchs.

Your Excellency,

I write this letter as a concerned citizen and keen observer of your remarkable performance as the Governor of our dear Oyo State. Over the years, I have witnessed how your conscience and genuine love for the people of this state have guided you in making tough yet thoughtful decisions. You have consistently demonstrated courage and clarity of purpose, even where others might have yielded under pressure.

These leadership qualities are a testament to the fact that you are a listening governor — one with the humility and heart to consider diverse opinions on matters that affect our state.

At this critical time, the issue confronting us goes beyond the chairmanship tussle among our revered monarchs. This is a time for unity, not division. I believe His Imperial Majesty, the Alaafin of Oyo, Iku Baba Yeye, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, in collaboration with your administration, can lead an effort to address the pressing challenge of insecurity that is rearing its head in our beloved state.

The Oyo State House of Assembly, under the leadership of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Debo Ogundoyin, must focus on legislation that promotes peace, unity, and prosperity. The proposed bill to rotate the permanent chairmanship of the Council of Obas — a position traditionally held by the Alaafin of Oyo — is, in my opinion, a distortion of our rich historical heritage. What exactly is the intended benefit of this proposed rotation? Changing tradition for its own sake, without clear positive impact, is both unnecessary and potentially disruptive.

Preserving our cultural heritage is crucial. Instituting a rotational chairmanship among the three foremost monarchs in the state risks undermining the unity and historical continuity that the Alaafin’s role represents. Such a change could sow seeds of discord where harmony once prevailed.

Therefore, I respectfully urge the House of Assembly to reconsider this bill. Let sleeping dogs lie. Let us not open the door to avoidable tension among our traditional institutions.

To you, our esteemed Governor, Engr. SeyiMakinde, this is yet another opportunity to rise to the occasion — as you have done so many times before. I appeal to you to use your good office to intervene and halt this proposed change. The future of our cultural identity and the peace of Oyo State may depend on it.

Respectfully,

Adeyemi Adeleke
