Born and raised in Potomac, Maryland, to Nigerian parents, Dr. Iweala was shaped by two worlds—his American upbringing and his deep-rooted connection to his African heritage. Annual family trips to Nigeria not only kept him grounded but also fueled a passion for service and global impact.
I feel privileged to be a surgeon because of the impact and improvement that I can have on my patients’ lives.
After earning a BA in economics from Harvard and an MD/MBA from Harvard Medical and Business Schools, he trained at George Washington University and New York University, refining his expertise in orthopedic and spine surgery. Today, he stands at the forefront of his field, recently becoming one of the first surgeons in Maryland to perform a successful navigated lumbar spinal fusion using robotics—a leap forward in patient safety, precision, and recovery.

But behind the surgical mask is a man driven by more than skill. Inspired by his father’s medical legacy and anchored by a strong family foundation—including his wife and young daughter—Dr. Iweala is a researcher, a mentor, and a proud father who still curates seasonal playlists of Afrobeat, R&B, and hip-hop.
Whether he's exploring how tech can revolutionize African healthcare or guiding a patient to walk pain-free again, Dr. Iweala’s message is clear: dream big, plan long, and never stop pushing boundaries.
His story isn’t just about medicine—it’s about momentum. For the African youth, for patients worldwide, and for anyone daring to chart their own path.
