In the rugged mountains of Iran, where the regime’s forces hunted him with bounties and bloodlust, one American airman refused to break.
The Weapons Systems Officer (WSO) of a downed F-15E Strike Eagle had ejected into hostile territory. For 48 harrowing hours, he evaded capture—climbing a steep ridge, signalling beacons into the night, surviving on grit and courage. The region where his jet went down was known for its deep opposition to the Iranian government. Local civilians, risking everything, sheltered the brave American soul. Through a CIA program known as “unconventional assisted recovery,” quiet contacts were made with those willing to protect a U.S. airman while their own regime closed in.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) poured everything into the hunt. But they never stood a chance.
A senior Trump administration official later revealed the extraordinary layers of American ingenuity that turned the tide. Before the rescue even began, the CIA launched a brilliant deception campaign inside Iran, spreading word that U.S. forces had already located the WSO and were moving him toward exfiltration.
